Shipping Prices from China-Dec 2023
Posted by Leon Shepherd on December 13, 2023 at 8:06 amWe’ve gotten some rumours that a price spike is expected in end of December/January for shipping prices from China to E.U./U.S.
Anyone else hearing this?

Yes, we’ve had similar.
China to Europe -> 2-3 week increase in time.
4,000rmb+ price increase per FCL. -
I’ve heard something similar. The freight charge for a 20′ container from China to Europe may rise by $500 – $1000 by the end of December and into the next month.
However, I’m skeptical about the disruptions being long-term.

For a 24t ISO tank, our trusted forwarders have given us new rates. $3000-$3500 higher for January is expected now.
It won’t be long-term, but the fact is that price panicking has had ships completely booked out in December across all Chinese ports on European routes, and people are trying to reserve space in early January without price guarantees, it’s wild.

Leon, I concur with you.
Some of the rumors I’ve heard about the rising freight costs do not make sense. I suspect they are the result of human factors and panic acts although the circumstances do have impact. If many customers panic and go along with the much higher costs, the carriers will have less incentive to use the Red Sea route even if it could be feasible.
Leon, I appreciate your initiative to raise this topic here. We need a place where professionals can freely discuss and make more rational decisions. This platform needs people like you to grow.
